Week 8
Reflection on Lecture 8
In week eight’s lecture we learnt about business
models within the digital world. Firstly we learnt of the differences between
business firm , business processes and routines and how they make up the day to
day activities of a business. AS well as this I learnt how that because IT
allows for quicker decision making it flattens the structure of a business as
fewer managers are needed. I learnt that there 5 types of organisational
structure entrepreneurial , machine bureaucracy, divisionalised bureaucracy,
professional bureaucracy and adhocracy. We then went on to learn about the benefits
of using IS systems and how they can provide a competitive edge. This is
possible because of the automated actions the IS systems can do which results
in faster more accurate results for less money therefore lowering the costs of
the business which allows for greater profits. By adopting IS systems business
are often able to gain a competitive edge and we looked at examples such as Toyota
, IBM , and Nike and how each business via the use of IS systems was able to
create a core competency to allow themselves to stand out in todays highly saturated
markets .We also learnt about porters 5 forces a model which helps business to
map the pressures that are on the industry that the operate in and on their own
organisations.
Reflection on Group Work
This week me and my group have started to work entirely
on our presentation. WE are trying to ensure that we keep the slides concise
but still informative which s something that personally I am struggling with as I am finding it hard to decide which information is
the most important to put onto the slides and what can be expanded upon orally
when the presentation is given. To work on this I am looking at examples of
good presentations online, I am particularly looking at the formats that people
are using. In addition my group has been trying to work on this project when we
meet which is something I feel is holding us back. I am going to suggest when
we next meet that we each take sections to work on individually and then put
the work together in a decided format once completed.
